Anti-Semitism as a challenge for schools and extracurricular education

After a series of antisemitic attacks in recent years - especially in schools - the topic of antisemitism got again more attention in public. In many cases people of Muslim faith are made responsible for those threats. By contrast, right-wing extremist attacks and antisemitic attitudes in the middle of society often come out of sight. Although the issue of antisemitism has regularly been the subject of public debate in recent years and attracted media attention, the deficits in education in the fields of prevention and intervention are still considerable. The topic of antisemitism is usually understood as part of teaching about National Socialism and the Holocaust. Current forms of negative attitudes towards Jews are hardly the subject of teaching. The idea that historical-political education is the panacea against current antisemitism must be counteracted in sense of a wider view on today’s special antisemitic views.
