On the plurality of (religious) education: Findings from the connection between (religious) educational goals in the parental home with own religious and value orientations and own educational goals

The article deals, before the religious educational discourse on the often deplored decreasing religiosity of children and young people, on the one hand with the connections between religiosity and value orientations and the (religious) educational goals experienced in the parental home on the basis of the data of the Religion Monitor. On the other hand, on the basis of the data of the parents of the World Values Survey, the article reconstructs connections between value orientations, religiosity and educational goals that people want for their own children. In the German sample of the Religion Monitor (N = 2003), high and statistically significant correlations between religious beliefs and value orientations and educational goals experienced in childhood emerge. The German sample of the World Values Survey (N = 1525) also found high, statistically significant correlations between religious beliefs and value orientations and the educational goals desired for one's own children. The value structure of the interviewees is reflected both in the educational goals they experienced at home and in their preferred educational goals for their own children. The article thus differentiates the educational contexts according to Schwartz's value theory (openness, self-strengthening, self-preservation, self-overcoming) and proves that certain educational milieus are particularly related to religiosity and values. In a conclusion, the resulting religious educational implications are presented.
